Russian sailors awaiting trial on oil smuggling charges in Nigeria have been accommodated at a guesthouse of Russia's Trade Mission in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, a Unesco representative said Tuesday.
MOSCOW, September 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russian sailors awaiting trial on oil smuggling charges in Nigeria have been accommodated at a guesthouse of Russia's Trade Mission in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, a Unesco representative said Tuesday. Dmitry Yeryutin, a representative of the Unesco goodwill ambassador to Nigeria, said the sailors, who were released Monday after two years in prison with the Russian Embassy acting as their surety, would be staying on the trade mission's premises while their case was being heard in court.
"Our next step will be to get them acquitted as there is no evidence to prove the charge against them. This is quite realistic, given that our sailors will be defended by a new lawyer, hired and paid by the Unesco Goodwill Ambassador, Ara Abramian," Yeryutin said. (more)
