The Nigerian government is investigating 14 State governors for allegedly operating foreign bank accounts in violation of federal laws, a Code of Conduct Bureau official has said.
Abuja, Nigeria, 09/09 - The Nigerian government is investigating 14 State governors for allegedly operating foreign bank accounts in violation of federal laws, a Code of Conduct Bureau official has said.
Thompson Olatigbe said in Abuja Wednesday that government had written to the governors to close the accounts and forward evidence of their compliance to the government.
Nigeria has 36 State governors but the official did not name those involved.
However, three governors, Orji Uzor Kalu of south-east Abia State, Rasheed Ladoja of south-west Oyo and Saminu Turaki of northern State of Jigawa, are on trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for operating foreign bank accounts.
Last week, Kalu in turn accused President Olusegun Obasanjo of also operating foreign bank accounts and holding platinum credit cards.
Obasanjo has referred the allegation to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation.
