Marseille victory ends dismal run

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Olympique Marseille ended a dismal run by winning 1-0 at Sochaux on Sunday courtesy of a second-half goal from Nigeria midfielder Wilson Oruma.

Former Sochaux player Oruma struck from just outside the box on 67 minutes to present the former European champions with their first Ligue 1 win of the season.

Marseille had gone 14 league games without a win, stretching back to their poor run of form at the end of last season.

They climb four places up to 16th and leave the bottom spot to Metz, who lost 2-0 at home to Lille on Saturday.

Racing Lens had missed an opportunity to move into second place when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Girondins Bordeaux in a clash of styles earlier on Sunday.

Lens, who have scored more goals than any other team this season, kept trying but managed to breach Bordeaux's tight defence only once when Gabon striker Daniel Cousin equalized from inside the box in the 30th minute.

That goal was only the second conceded by Bordeaux this season.

The visitors had opened the scoring a minute earlier when Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh followed up a shot by former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer which had bounced back off the post.

Northerners Lens are in third place, five points behind leaders Olympique Lyon, who beat Monaco 2-1 on Saturday with two goals from debutant Brazilian striker Fred.

Bordeaux lie fifth, also five points off the pace.
