BENIN CITY - ARMED youths, suspected to be students of the Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi yesterday set ablaze a section of the administration block and the record office of the Accountancy department containing the records of examination scripts and evidence of those arrested for examination fraud during the last semester examination exercise.
Also, the state Police Command yesterday announced the arrest of four students of the institution over alleged involvement in secret cult activities and the killing of an indegene of Auchi community during the last Jeans Canival organised by the Student Union Government of the institution.
Vanguard gathered yesterday that the invasion of the institution's administration block by the armed youths on Tuesday night caused panic among students whose records were also affected by the fire. It was learnt that the youths put on fire the section of the institution's administration block before proceeding to the accountancy department of the school.
The attack, according to the institution source caught the internal security operatives napping as the unknown arsonists targeted the section where the unmarked scripts of the last semester examinations are kept and the records of the examination.
Although attempts to contact the institution's rector on telephone failed yesterday, the state Police Command spokesman, Mr Peter Ogboi confirmed the incident to Vanguard but said the arsonists only set ablaze a room in one of the departments.
However, Mr Ogboi informed Vanguard that four students of the institution were yesterday arrested and transferred to Police Headquarters in Benin over alleged involvement in cult-related activities and the killing of one person in August during the Jeans Carnival ceremony organised by the SUG.
