An attempt by unknown arsonists to burn down the secretariat of Ado-Ekiti Local Government in the early hours of yesterday was thwarted on quick intervention of good samaritans, security agents and fire brigade.
However, the office of the Chairman of the council, Mr. Taye Fasubaa, where the fire started was partly damaged by the inferno which started around 11pm in the night as valuable property like electronics, computers and furniture were burnt.
Conducting newsmen round his office yesterday, Fasubaa said the suspected arsonists pulled down the wall of the secretariat to gain entrance into the premises without the knowledge of security men after which they broke the louvres of his office to gain entrance into the place.
He insisted that the incident was politically motivated, saying he personally informed officials of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Ado-Ekiti to cut-off power supply to the secretariat to forestall further spread of the fire and commended men of the state's Fire Brigade for responding quickly to distress call on the fire oubreak.
When THISDAY visited the secretariat, it was discovered that only the office of the chairman and that of his secretary was affected by the fire while the louvres of the room was shattered and littered the floor.
