The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel A. Adetuyi, who confirmed the news while parading the dead bodies of the armed robbers before newsmen at the state police headquarters, Moscow road, said 'the Area Commander of Ahoada Police station, Barrister Bassey Inyang, at about 2am Saturday night sent a distressed signal to him that the men of the under-world numbering about 20 had completely invaded All Statp Trust Bank branch in the area demanding reinforcement to support Policemen on ground."
On receipt of the signal, the commissioner said more men were mobilised to the area of about 50 kilometres from the state police headquarters, saying at the end of the episode three police were killed and two out of the 20 robbers were gunned down.
However, THISDAY gathered yesterday that one of the robbers that escaped was arrested and is helping the police on further investigations into the robbery incident.
The commissioner added that one of the policemen on guard of the bank was killed by the bandits, one policeman from the re-enforcement unit and one from the Divisional Police Station of the area were shot in the process of chasing robbers who fled into the bush.
Adetuyi disclosed that over 920 of the expedient bullets were assembled at the end of the bloody encounter, with one AK 47 raffle recovered from the dare-devils.
Other items recovered from them include 23 fully loaded magazines of AK 47, three GSM mobile handsets, two four feet tall gas cylinders and iron rod which the robbers wanted to use in breaking into the strong room of the bank, three cars namely a Volkswagen.
