Mass sack at MTN Nigeria

Scores of employees at MTN Nigeria have been shown the way out following a massive outsourcing programme underway by the South African cellular operator and the nation's number one mobile company.

Scores of employees at MTN Nigeria have been shown the way out following a massive outsourcing programme underway by the South African cellular operator and the nation's number one mobile company.

Daily Independent learnt that all MTN Friendships Centres nationwide are being shut down while their functions would be performed by new outlets called Connect Shops which will be outsourced to MTN partners nationwide.

Other areas of MTN's overall operations are billed to be affected in the phased internal shutdown exercise as they are outsourced to its partners.

Employees at the Friendship Centres are the first casualties in the emerging dispensation that is to spread across other departments among its estimated 1,800 employees. Sources confirmed that the sacked employees were given a one-month disengagement pay while they have been urged to reapply in other departments in the company. However, hope of the re-absorption of all the sacked employees into MTN is unlikely. It was learnt that the outsourcing programme was driven by diminishing margin and intense competition. The job cuts are some of the outcomes of a new move by MTN to enable it focus mainly on its core area of network rollout and upgrade and contract out ancillary areas to its partners.

The company hopes to ensure that its subscribers are retained through enhanced efficiency of its network.

When contacted, Head, Corporate Communication of MTN, Funmi Omitowoju, confirmed the development. She MTN is restructuring and moving people to new departments.
