20 Arrested, As EFCC Storms Oluwole Market


Security operatives attached to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday stormed Oluwole Market known as den of fraudsters, and at the end about 20 suspected fraudsters were arrested.

Security operatives attached to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday stormed Oluwole Market known as den of fraudsters, and at the end about 20 suspected fraudsters were arrested.

The raid on this market came as Lagos State Police spokesman, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, confirmed yesterday two suspected members of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) were arrested at Oshodi for their alleged involvement in the event that led to the death of one Ahmed Ayankunle.

EFCC, source said, carried out the raid in conjunction with Nigeria Police arising from the incessant complaint of members of the public over alleged dirty and shady businesses being transacted in the market.

It revealed that some official documents which are not expected to be in possession of unauthorised persons or bodies were recovered from different locations in the market.

THISDAY checks revealed that such illegal documents as bank drafts, cheque books and traveler's cheques belonging to different financial institutions were recovered from different locations in the market.

Other articles recovered from Oluwole Market include international passports of different countries, travelling documents, certificates of various higher institutions, various official stamps of government parastatals, corporate bodies, federal ministries, banks among others.

It was disclosed that the raid constituted a part of the on-going anti-corruption crusade of the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration being canvassed to created an enabling atmosphere for foreign investments.

Ojajuni confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying the raid was just a beginning and nothing would stop security operatives from ridding Oluwole Market and other parts of the country of illegal deals.

He urged members of the public to always give the Police useful information about any fraudsters in their environment, adding that "the fight against corruption and its perpetrators requires the inputs of every good citizens and its dividend will no doubt create peaceful atmosphere in the country.
