Nigerians yesterday woke-up to hear the shocking news of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raid on the US home of Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Nigerians yesterday woke-up to hear the shocking news of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raid on the US home of Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The wire services were also awash with the news, just as there was intermittent mention given to it by the Cable News Network (CNN).

Though the raid took place on August 3, some three weeks ago, the American media reported it first last Saturday. All the newspapers were quoting the The Times-Picayune, a relatively unknown newspaper based in New Orleans, the constituency of William Jefferson, the Democratic Congressman at the centre of the telecommunications deal in which the FBI agents were trying to establish a link with
Atiku.

Times-Picayune had previously published series of stories on the sting operation on Jefferson concerning alleged business sharp practices. The raid on Atiku's house was discovered by the paper in the course of its work on the Jefferson FBI investigation.
