The Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu (MON) says that the Federal Government is yet to refund to Abia State government the sum of N280 million which it had spent to maintain federal roads in Aba in past.
He said as a result, he cannot continue to waste a huge amount of money to repair the road until the Federal Government refunds him the money.
Speaking at the Government House Umuahia when the Founder and General Overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi visited him in his office, governor, Kalu also renewed his call on the FG to urgently repairs failed portions of federal roads in Aba even as he has vowed to make the state's commercial nerve centre the cleanest city by the end of this year.
On the environmental condition of Aba, governor Kalu said he had plans to make the city the cleanest city in Nigeria and vowed to do it so that other states in the federation would emulate the state. According to him, the state government has placed orders for refuse disposal equipment from Mercedes Benz Company.
"The environmental problem of Aba is very big problem to my government. Governance is all about challenges and I will tackle it headlong".
Speaking on the deplorable condition of trunk A road in Aba metropolis, Kalu appealed to Federal Ministry of Works to urgently carry out repairs works on failed sections of Aba-Owerri road, Aba-Port Harcourt road and Aba- Ikot Ekpene road.
Getting into and coming of Aba is now dreaded by motorists and travelers alike as a result of man hours lost due to traffic congestion occasioned by bad roads on Aba-Owerri road and Aba- Port Harcourt road.
This has result in diversions, with heavy-duty trunks using trunk B and C roads, which are fast wearing away due to heavy traffic.
The number one citizen of the state said the Federal Ministry of Works, should rally to the assistance of the state by repairing the bad federal roads in Aba in order not to cripple economic and commercial activities and save the road users from the trauma they go through daily while commuting through the road.
