UITH Conjoined Twins Die

The medical feat performed by doctors of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital on Wednesday on the separation of conjoined twins suffered a tragic blow yesterday as the twins died.

The medical feat performed by doctors of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital on Wednesday on the separation of conjoined twins suffered a tragic blow yesterday as the twins died.

Consequently, the joy of their Kogi-born mother, Mrs. Busayo Komolafe, to head back to her Egbe country home with the babies was being aborted.

The hope of the hospital workers who included the medical doctors and nurses who took delivery of the twins of using the record to boost their ego may have died too with the death of the twins.

The doctors and the hospital staff who have been celebrating the successful operation as the first of its kind in the hospital had their joy cut short with death of the twins at about 2am and 6am. They have since been mourning the demise of the twins with the mother.

The Teaching Hospital had on Wednesday posted major medical feat when a five-man medical team separated a co-joined twins, delivered by a 19-year-old mother.

Chairman, UITH Medical Advisory Council (CMAC), Dr. Olugbenga Mokuolu, had said after the surgery 'we discovered that they have the same cord and vessel and that is why we decided to separate them. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time we are operating a co-joined twins in this hospital."

But notwithstanding the setback with the death of the twins, the medical advisory boss pointed out that the operation was a remarkable attempt by the five-member medical team that successfully carried it out under the leadership of Dr. James Adeniran.

Speaking on the sad turn of event, Mukuolu said it was an emergency operation that was carried out on the twins as one of them was already at the point of death before they were taken to the theatre.

Apart from this, he said the babies were delivered prematurely and had no medical history at the hospital. Mokuolu said the mother of the babies, Busayo Komolafe, delivered the babies at home before they were taken to ECWA Medical Hospital, Egbe in Kogi State after which they were referred to UITH.

CMAC has doubted the chances of survival of the twins shortly after their operation on Wednesday as he explained that the baby had to be assisted to breath because they were delivered prematurely with combined weight of 2.7kg.

He said the condition of the babies before they were separated could be as a result of the incomplete in the division processes of the embryo.
