Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital treats 1,082 HIV/AIDS patients monthly


THE Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) expends over N1,082,000.00 on the treatment of 1,082 HIV Positive patients every month, the chief medical director of AKTH, Dr. Abdulhamid Isa Duste has said.

Dr. Dutse disclosed this Wednesday during the 10th anniversary of the annual memorial lecture of Dr. Abubakar Imam, which was held within the hospital premises.He said the amount also covers free laboratory services as well as the drugs for the victims of the deadly diseases.

He explained that AKTH is committed towards augmenting the support of the federal ministry of Health/Global funds initiative and the PEPFAR/institute of Human Virology of the United State programme geared towards assisting the unfortunate victims of HIV.

Said he "We are so far treating about 1,082 HIV positive patients at the cost of 1,000 naira per month as well as providing free laboratory services to all the patients suffering from that disease"

The AKTH chief medical director also disclosed that they provide fully established voluntary counseling, HIV/testing and PMTCT services to all the victims of the disease through the assistance of GHAIN, FHI, AXIOS and the futures groups international.

According to him inspite of the difficulties bedeviling the hospital, only 302 deaths were recorded in the first half of the year out of the over 4,000 patients admitted in the hospital within the first quarter of the year, adding that 22,874 laboratory services were also rendered within the period.

Enumerating the achievements of the hospital so far, he said N9,577.212.46 million was expended between August 2004 to July this year, out of which 100 residents are in various training while two doctors have just returned from United Kingdom after training on renal transplant programme.

On the issue of funding in the hospital, the chief medical director disclosed that some philanthropists, local government chairmen and the state government have been very helpful to the hospital, adding that without their generous donations the management would have go begging for funds to run the hospital because of the poor state of patients in the hospital.

Speaking earlier, the guest speaker at the annual memorial lecture, professor Christopher Chigbo Ekwempu , while delivering his lecture titled "The right Medicine", noted that the only reason why people take medications without cure is because their sickness is not properly diagnosed and as such the right medicine is not administered.

Professor Ekwempu stressed the need for patient as well as thorough diagnosis before the medications can be applied; he called on the relevant authorities to ensure that proper procedures are taken to avoid mistakes that can lead to complete disruption of a patient physiology.

Highlights of the occasion includes presentations of certificates to maiden graduates 20 diploma and certificate of the school of Health Information management.
