AWKA - Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested 100 suspects with hard drugs weighing 500 kilogrammes in the last four months of this year.
Mallam Ahmed Tijani-Bunu, the state Commander made this known at a seminar organised by the agency in conjunction with Anambra Central Senatorial zone held at Ogidi, Idemili North Headquarters.
Tijani-Bunu lamented that the most worrisome thing was that majority of the suspects were aged between 15 and 50 years, and called on the Chairmen of local councils within the zone to reactivate and re-invigorate the Drug Abuse Control Committees (DACC) in the area to curb the increase in drug trafficking and abuse.
According to him, 30 of the suspects had already been convicted by the Federal High Court, Enugu, while the Command has counselled and re-integrated ten persons with drug related problems.
Tijian-Bunu disclosed that the prevalent drugs within Anambra State includes cocaine, cannabis, heroin and other psychotropic substances, describing hard drugs scourge as a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the society.
He said that drug problems are multi-dimensional, which require multi-disciplinary approach to solving them.
The Commander noted that there was need for cooperation and collaboration among all tiers of government to effectively checkmate the menace rather than waiting for the Federal Government alone.
