It has been sensationally revealed that controversial Nigerian player John Mikel Obi's contract at Old Trafford will begin to run from January, 2006, but subject to his getting a work permit.

Norwegian club, Lyn, had given the youngster till Friday to join the team or face FIFA's sanction after it was ruled last week that he should return to Norway.

In a revelation that may put to rest claims by Chelsea over the player, Lyn Director Morgan Anderson disclosed Tuesday that 'Manchester United came on the scene in May and it was agreed that if he could get his work permit, then he could join the club in January 2006. Anderson had said Monday that the player had until Friday to return to the Norwegian club or face the wrath of the law. Obi had been at the centre of transfer row involving FC Lyn, Manchester United and Chelsea.

While his agent John Shittu insists that the player would not return to Lyn, FIFA ruled that he must respect the terms of his contract to the letter.
