Aba Killings: Gov Accuses Police of Harassment

Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused the police of arresting and harassing people over the death of citizens at Orie Ohabiam Electronics market in Aba.

Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, has accused the police of arresting and harassing people over the death of citizens at Orie Ohabiam Electronics market in Aba.

In his address at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Kalu said he would go to court to secure the release of those affected in the police raid.

He pointed out that the actual perpetrators had not been identified and that those arrested had no hand in the unfortunate event, adding the out-lawed Bakassi Vigilantee outfit no longer existed in the state.

The governor regretted that in the past few weeks, the police from Abuja had their field day by harassing and arresting traders at the specialised market, while accusing them of being members of the out-lawed Bakassi Vigilantee Group.

Kalu said though he did not support the reckless killings, only those who had a hand in the matter should be arrested, tried and punished as a deterrent to others who may nurse such future ambition.

The governor stated that the stakeholders meeting was called to explore ways to bring peace and reconciliation to the fractionalised PDP in the state, but nonetheless exonerated the PDP's secretary, Chief Ojo Maduekwe of any complexity in the crises of the state chapter of the party.
