There are no strong indications that the Nigeria Football Association is seriously carrying out the duties that will help Nigeria qualify for the World Cup in Germany next year.
The team is expected, this weekend, to travel to Portugal for final preparation for the qualifier in Algeria but up till press time yesterday, the association had not signed any contract with the coaches hired to work with Austin Eguavoen. The coaches are Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi and Ike Shorunmu.
They have all been verbally engaged and have since started work. They were all in Libya for the international friendly match that ended 1-0 in Nigeria's favour. But the coaches are yet to be inspired by way of motivation and formal engagement. They don't know their fate.
A source close to the sports ministry said yesterday that the minister of sports was not happy with the NFA for the way they have handled some sensitive issues concerning the World Cup qualifiers.
The source said that the minister would address some issues which have been tabled before him, one of which is the case of the coaches. The general coordination of the team has also not been encouraging according to inside sources who say that the coaches have not been fully involved in their plans.
"And this is the same NFA that went extra mile to engage foreign coaches but just couldn't sit down for a day to consider the state of the coaches who would have even worked with the foreign coach if they got him. They have not shown respect to the local coaches and this is not encouraging enough," the minister's aide said, informing that the minister was briefed in Libya during the friendly match.
