Governor Orji Uzor Kalu on Tuesday threatened to go to court to challenge the continued detention of some people alleged to be members of the outlawed Bakassi group who murdered 27 people in Aba recently.
UMUAHIA - Governor Orji Uzor Kalu on Tuesday threatened to go to court to challenge the continued detention of some people alleged to be members of the outlawed Bakassi group who murdered 27 people in Aba recently.
Speaking during a caucus meeting of PDP in Umuahia, Kalu said that the people being detained were not Bakassi boys, adding that Bakassi had since been banned in the state.
His words: "In the last few days, they have been sending police to come and harass the people in Abia State. That nonsense must stop because if they do not stop, the people may be forced to take the law into their hands. They went Ariaria market and were arresting people in the markets.
"There is no Bakassi anywhere in Abia State. I urge them to release those market people they are holding, otherwise we will go to court of competent jurisdiction to challenge them.
They should look for those who killed the people and punish them and leave these market people they are holding. I don't support killing and I will never support killing. People should not be saying something else and be doing another thing."
He explained that the essence of the stakeholders meeting is to find peace, advising politicians not to take political issues as a do-or-die affair.
He regretted that some of the people he ensured their success into elective offices have turned against him stressing that in future, those who would occupy political positions in the state be people who have been consistent in identifying with the people.
He said: "I want to assure you that the next governor of the state must be produced by the people here.
The three senators and eight members of the House of Representatives, as well as all the local government chairman, members of the House of Assembly and all the councillors must come from us.
