El-Rufai empowers Abuja hawkers with kits

AS part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration's market reform agenda and its drive at empowering the hawkers in the Federal Capital Territory, the Abuja Markets Management Limited, a subsidiary of the Abuja Investment and Property Development Company (AIPDC), put a smile on the faces of the hawkers and porters at the Wuse Market when it presented them with trolleys, hawking carts, Coolers and wheel barrows.

ABUJA - AS part of the Federal Capital Territory Administration's market reform agenda and its drive at empowering the hawkers in the Federal Capital Territory, the Abuja Markets Management Limited, a subsidiary of the Abuja Investment and Property Development Company (AIPDC), put a smile on the faces of the hawkers and porters at the Wuse Market when it presented them with trolleys, hawking carts, Coolers and wheel barrows.

Hawking kits received by the hawkers and porters were forty wheelbarrows from Indomie, forty trolleys, umbrellas from Coca-Cola, twenty trolleys from Guinness, makers of Malta Guinness and five trawlers from 7UP Bottling Company.

Making the presentation at Wuse Market in Abuja on behalf of AIPDC Managing Director, the Executive Director, Alhaji Mohammed Lawal, who noted that the market reform programme of the FCDA tagged "Hawkers/Porters" reform project aimed at regulating, upgrading as well as organizing the business activities of hawkers and porters in the market, said the programme was drawn from a wider vision of bringing about standard in the operation of markets in the Federal Capital Territory, just as he said the new system will serve as a reference point to other market operators across the country.

According to him, hawking and porting business in Wuse Market hitherto was seen as that for the downtrodden ones in the society who manage to live from hand to mouth and devoid of encouragement from the government on how to move from a small scale to a stronger one, adding that the FCTA has concluded plans to work in collaboration with some corporate organizations like Coca-Cola, Indomie, Guinness Nigeria Plc and 7-UP Bottling Company geared towards bringing a drastic change in the attitude and mode of hawkers and porters in FCT markets.
