Panel'll uncover cause of jail break ~RSG


The Rivers State Government says its is optimistic that the Presidential Panel of Inquiry into the jail break at the Port Harcourt and Ogwashi Uku prisons would be able to uncover what led to the unfortunate incident.

The State Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby said this when the out-going Controller of Prisons in the state, Mr. Innocent Akombo paid him a farewell visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.

Sir Toby who described the prisons service as strategic to the development of human beings, noted that it was necessary to get to the root of the problems that made the jail break possible so as to prevent re-occurrence.

"We believe that all of us that have been called to service in various arms of government must be committed and dedicated," he said.

The deputy governor also expressed the hope that the presidential Panel would "uncover whatever lapses there and make appropriate recommendations as to the best ways to put the prisons in a better form."

He noted that the prisons have a strategic role in the federal government IS reformation and re-integration programme for those who have spent parts of their life in prisons and urged the new Controller to do his best to improve the condition of the prisons.

Sir Toby described the jail-break at the Port Harcourt Prisons as an occurrence that has made the people of the state sad and prayed against re-occurrence.

Earlier, the out-going Controller in-charge of the Port Harcourt Prisons, Mr Innocent Akombo had thanked the State Government for the cordial relationship the prisons management enjoyed under him.

Mr Akombo who was accompanied on the visit by the In-coming Controller, Mr Benjamin Bogunjoko also appealed to the State Government to extend the traditional hospitality o the people to his successor.
