Youths of the South South geo-political zone have been urged not to be naïve to such an extent they will be misled by politicians.
The call was made by Lady M.G. Alagoa while addressing youths of the geo-political zone under the auspices of the South-South Peoples Assembly Youth Directorate who held a summit in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.
"They say that a people deserve the leader they choose. So the S.S.P.A. (South-South Peoples Assembly) and I, urge you not to be misled by politicians who preach self-interest. You must be very careful not to choose wrong leaders, who want to lean on ethnic sentiments. Rather, you must choose to follow leaders who have good goals for the entire South-South and Nigeria.
"We as the S.S.P.A. are determined to express the collective will of the peoples of the South-South geopolitical zone. We are therefore, working towards transcending individuals, states, sectional, ethnic, clannish, religious political, and partisan interests", she said.
Lady Alagoa called on the youths to feel free to call on the elders whenever they feel that they (the elders) are going wrong.
"If on certain occasions the youth feel that we, the elders, are going wrong, please do not be confrontational, but tell us by way of dialogue. This forum is always open. We will always respond to dialogue. I assure you all that we will always be here to listen", she added.
She averred that the situation where nobody from the zone has become president of Nigeria is no more acceptable.
"On behalf of all the people of the South-South zone, the S.S.P.A. has decided that politicians from this zone must fight for the presidency of Nigeria in the forthcoming 2007 elections. We, in the S.S.P.A., are counting on the support of all the youths in this zone to achieve this rightful political goal for the zone," she pleaded.
