Federal Government has been urged to implemente judgement of a Federal High Court in Ilorin, which ordered re-instatement of 49 lecturers sacked at the University of Ilorin in 2001.
Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in a statement issued yesterday in the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, said only an immediate implementation of the court judgement would allay fears that the university authority was not out on a vengeance mission.
The court had in July nullified the decision of the university's governing council to terminate appointment of lecturers, on the ground that the sack did not conform to procedures.
The statement which was issued by TUC Chairman Bayelsa State council, Comrade Chris Adokeme, the judgement had shown that the judiciary could be relied upon, no matter how long it took.
It commended the courage, maturity and perseverance of the sacked lecturers but regretted that two of them died while waiting for what it called, "the slow wheel of justice to run its full course.
"We want all the staff, students and members of the community to be vigilant and ensure that the victory was not subverted or implemented in the breach.
"TUC wish that the governing council of University of Ilorin does not continue the hard stance of the previous council which seemed to be afflicted with some military mentality.
"The University of Ilorin needs peace. And the interest of the students must be taken into consideration," it added.
