Police launch manhunt for lawyer … Over alleged rape of teenager

The police have launched a massive manhunt for an Abuja-based legal practitioner, believed to be on the run after being released on bail over alleged rape of a teenager.

The police have launched a massive manhunt for an Abuja-based legal practitioner, believed to be on the run after being released on bail over alleged rape of a teenager.

Mr. Stephen Anyanwu was arrested penultimate Tuesday and detained till late Wednesday at the Karmo police station in the federal capital, having been accused of rape by a Junior Secondary School (JSS) student of Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa, Miss Margaret Adama.

Ironically, Margaret, who accused the lawyer of luring her to his residence at Gwagwa, a slum in Abuja, and forcibly breaking her virginity, is the younger sister of Anyanwu's fiancée, Miss Sandra Adama. The lawyer's alleged show of shame, was exclusively reported last week by Saturday Sun.

Daily Sun gathered that the outcome of a medical report on the alleged rape from the Maitama General Hospital in Abuja, has been forwarded to the police who have concluded plans to transfer the case from Karmo police station to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the FCT Police Command for further action.

Police sources said though Barrister Anyanwu had been reporting daily at the Karmo police station in fulfilment of his bail conditions from last week Thursday through Sunday, he suddenly stopped showing up at the station on Monday and since then his whereabouts remain unknown.
Worried over the development, the sources said detectives at the Karmo police station had laid ambush at his Gwagwa residence to effect his arrest since Tuesday, but to no avail.

It was further gathered that a legal practitioner who stood as surety for Anyanwu's release on bail, has pledged to produce him as requested by the police before the end of this week, as he(Anyanwu) is said to have travelled out of Abuja.

But authoritative police sources told Daily Sun Thursday, that the FCT police command has begun a manhunt for the lawyer. The command's spokesman, Mr. Ativie Ehiomele (DSP), who confirmed the development in a telephone interview, said " yes, we're looking for him to forward his case file to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice". Ehiomele declined further comments on the issue.
