A violent clash between two rival cult groups at the Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma in Edo State, Tuesday, left three students dead and three others injured.
Daily Sun gathered at the university town that the clash occurred when a member of the Eiye confraternity strode into a birthday party organized by another rival cult group, the Black Axe confraternity and this provoked an unfavourable reaction from the organizers of the party.
The alleged intruder was said to have been beaten up mercilessly but was rescued by his colleagues who later took him to the hospital.
They allegedly regrouped later that night and launched an attack on those at the party, killing two of the students instantly. One was said to have been shot, while the other was axed to death.
The clash, it was gathered, has heightened tension in institutions of higher learning across Edo State following fears of reprisal attacks, as the two cult groups have members in vitually all the tertiary institutions
Although the authorities of the university have identified one of the students as having graduated from the institution about two years ago, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Peter Ogboi, however, confirmed the death of two students during the fracas.
Besides, he also disclosed that the State Police Command has deployed its operatives to other higher institutions in the state to maintain peace and order as well as to avert further bloodshed.
Ogboi who said the matter has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), however, called on parents and guardians including the larger society to monitor the activities of their wards saying that the war against cultism is not for the police alone.
