Mitee scores confab low

The President, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Ledum Mitee says recently concluded National Political Reforms Conference fell below the expectation of most Nigeria as it fails to give attention to the primary issue of justice.

The President, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Ledum Mitee says recently concluded National Political Reforms Conference fell below the expectation of most Nigeria as it fails to give attention to the primary issue of justice.

In a chat with the Telegraph in Port Harcourt, the MOSOP president said that the conference failed to look at the feelings and passions of certain people on some issues even as he decried the structures upon which the conference was conducted.

Mr. Mitee who was also a delegate from Rivers State, however, noted that the Conference was not a complete failure, pointing out that a substantial part of the job was still not done, even though some good things happened there.

The obsession of Nigeria with oil and oil wells and how to share them, he said, was the problem of the country, saying "if I have my way the oil should just dry up and we come back to our senses".

The MOSOP president explained that he detest categorizing zones as in South-West, North-South and so on, but pointed out that the issue has been that the class of those who have been benefiting from exploitation of others do not want to give up.

The insistence on 25 percent derivation for the South-South shows the passion and sentiments people attach to the issue of justice. Mitee noted that there are other issues, which he was equally interested in getting a better and deserved deal for the region.

Mitee continued that the issue of the walk-out by delegates from the zone was the high point of the conference, saying that motive was clearly understood by Nigerians and the outside world pointing out that what was achieved outside the conference was more than what was achieved within.

He called for a sustainable development and livelihood for people of the zone especially as oil, the mainstay of her economy comes from there so that future generations can benefit from the struggles of the people.
