INEC approves Okorocha's party

INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accorded Action Alliance (AA) recognition as a political party.

INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accorded Action Alliance (AA) recognition as a political party.

Led by former presidential adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, Chief Rochas Okorocha, AA transformed into a party from the National Mass Movement of Nigeria (NMMN) led by Alhaji Bukar Mandara.

INEC director of public affairs, Steve Osemeke, who disclosed the official recognition of AA to Daily Champion in Abuja yesterday, said the decision had already been communicated to the party.

He said that the letter approving the change of name from NMMN to AA was signed by the Commission's secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Jauro.

Chief Okorocha, a one-time member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decamped to the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) to run for president in 2003 but when Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was chosen as the party's flagbearer under controversial circumstances, Okorocha and some other aspirants stormed out of the convention venue.

The flamboyant politician was courted again by the PDP after the 2003 polls and made President Olusegun Obasanjo's Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs.

He, however, refused to return to the PDP or to the ANPP till he made another major appearance in Jos, Plateau State, recently at the national convention of the AA/NMMN which also served as the occasion for the transformatin of the NMMN to AA.

Soon after, at the reconstitution of the Federal Executive Council, he was relieved of his appointment, apparently to allow him concentrate on his presidential ambition.
