Police arrest three over PDP man's murder

THE Edo State Police Command yesterday arrested a top official of Oredo Local Government Council and two of his aides over their alleged involvement in last week killing of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in the Council.

BENIN CITY - THE Edo State Police Command yesterday arrested a top official of Oredo Local Government Council and two of his aides over their alleged involvement in last week killing of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in the Council.

Besides, the combined team of Police and State Security (SSS) operatives have been ordered to track down, through questioning of the wife of the deceased politician, the SSS operatives allegedly linked to the scene of the killing and to review the expected report of autopsy being conducted on the body of the deceased by consultants to the Central Specialist Hospital.

Vanguard gathered that the arrest of the Council top shot generated shock among council workers and residents of the state capital due to the much publicised media denial by him that he was not involved in the killing of the deceased. It was learnt that the man was invited to the office of the State Security Service (SSS) yesterday but was not detained.

A few hours later, the operatives of the state command assigned to be on the look out for the Personal Assistant of the man accused of slapping the deceased and leading some unknown men to the house, arrested the aides.

The State Command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Peter Ogboi confirmed the presence of the council top shot at their secetariat, and said "we are only interrogating him on the death of the politician to ascertain those involved."

Meanwhile, the Police Command yesterday continued investigation into the killing of the Party Chieftain by assigning the conduct of the autopsy to some consultants attached to the State owned hospital, Central (Specialist) Hospital.

A source at the hospital told Vanguard that the tissues and other necessary samples have been taken and the result of the autopsy would be released to the command next week.

The deceased Party Chieftain, Mr Lucky Eboigbe had last Thursday declared his intention to contest the position of Chairmanship of the Oredo Local Government Council in 2007, but was beaten up and killed by some unknown armed men at his residence a few hours later.
