OWERRI — THE lingering crisis in the Imo State branch of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a fresh dimension Wednesday morning as a team of armed policemen sealed off the state Secretariat of the party in Owerri.
Although the action of the Nigeria Police did not come as a surprise to careful political watchers in the state, what was very evident was the determination of those sent to enforce the tall order.
"We arrived the party secretariat this morning only to discover that it has been sealed by the police. We have not been told who ordered the seal up or why it was sealed," a party loyalist who preferred anonymity told Vanguard.
He confirmed that there has been a bit of crisis in the party for some time but regretted that the speed at which it was degenerating was too fast. "I am aware that there is a lingering struggle, indeed a bitter struggle, for supremacy among the top members of the party. They are mainly the Abuja group and those operating from the state. What I do not know for now, is who will win at the end of time," the man said.
Reacting also to the police action, the Deputy Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Chuma Nnaji said, "It was no use sealing up the building because the state PDP secretariat has ceased to be there."
According to Nnaji, "the tenancy agreement entered into some years ago had expired and the landlord had long asked for repossession
