Nigerians are no ritualists - Nigerian High Commissioner

Mrs Mariam Muhammad, Nigerian High Commissioner to The Gambia, has dispelled rife misconceptions that Nigerians are ritualists, arguing that the rituals shown on Nigerian movies should not be interpreted to mean that Nigerians are ritualists.

Mrs Mariam Muhammad, Nigerian High Commissioner to The Gambia, has dispelled rife misconceptions that Nigerians are ritualists, arguing that the rituals shown on Nigerian movies should not be interpreted to mean that Nigerians are ritualists.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday held to introduce the visiting Nigerian movie producer and actor Sam Dede and Nigerian Miss Culture and Tourism, Jummai Musa, Mrs Muhammad affirmed that 'what you see in our movies, even if it depicts culture, doesn't really mean that everything in it is what actually takes place on the ground."

She stressed that rituals shown in the movies are exaggerated. 'We don't kill to make money; we don't use money anyhow", she said.

She noted that such rituals are included in some of the movies simply to create fantasies in order to sell them. 'Indian movies are filled with magic, western movies are filled with alien views like vampire and violence, these depict a little bit of what really happens," she said.
