Nigeria hands over trafficked girls to Ghana, Togo


The Nigerian government has handed over to representatives of Ghana and Togo, four girl victims of human trafficking from the two countries, the local press reported Friday.

Lagos, Nigeria, 08/14 - The Nigerian government has handed over to representatives of Ghana and Togo, four girl victims of human trafficking from the two countries, the local press reported Friday.

Carol Ndaguba, chief executive of Nigeria`s National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP), handed over the girls, aged between 17 and 19, in Lagos Thursday.

The girls were rescued by the police, following a tip-off that the they had been forcefully married to some old men in Nigeria`s border town of Idiroko.

The suspected traffickers were also arrested and are currently facing trial before a Lagos court.

Nigeria has launched an aggressive campaign against human trafficking, with NAPTIP having rescued more than 200 victims since it was established in August 2003.
