Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha has condemned the fashion, which compels young ladies to dress in semi-naked clothes.
Governor Alamieyeseigha handed down the condemnation during the official launching of a book titled "Amassoma in the core of the Niger Delta and Izon Culture: A Historical Perspective" edited by Prince Ebiowei Kainga. Chief Alamieyeseigha, who noted that he has never been able to come to terms with the new trend which propels young boys and girls to mark their bodies tattoos to advertise the cult group to which they belong, said "it is tragic that half-clad and semi -naked girls have become common sights on our streets today".
The Governor decried the vandalism in towns and villages where the youths have forcefully taken over power and authority from their elders, adding that " all these are signs that our value system has definitely taken a dive into the valley of moral decadence".
He said unless that Ijaw man makes the necessary self -appraisal, identify his points of error and retrace his steps, his cultural heritage and real identity as a person will be jeopardized.
Noting that culture has a great contributing role to play in the civilization and progress of a people, Governor Alamieyeseigha urged the Ijaw people to re-invent themselves and recreate their history while at the same time preserving their culture and oral tradition.
The Governor charged Ijaw scholars to write more books on the major political and socio-economic developments that have taken place in the state, adding that government was ready to support such endeavours.
Reviewer of the book, Dr Atei Okorobia said the book was a bold effort to chronicle the origins of the people of Amassoma.
