Deputy Leader condemns SPDC

The Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. James George Fuayefika has expressed disappointment with the attitude of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC).

The Deputy Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. James George Fuayefika has expressed disappointment with the attitude of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC).

Hon. Fuayefika under motion for adjournment on the floor of the House noted that SPDC has sent a posted/handbill to the honourable members of the House. The posters according to Fuayefika's observation was a call for applicants from the various communities in the country to apply Shell's scholarship scheme.

But the Okrika-born lawmaker observed that the posters were made available to Assembly men last Monday being the 8th day of August, 2005, while the applications called had already expired on the 29th of July, 2005.

The number 4 lawmaker in the state, stated with emphasis that such action exhibited by SPDC was tantamount to looking down on the lawmakers as well as their constituents, adding that such action further shows that SPDC does not want their constituents to participate in the advertised scholarship scheme, even though they are the direct tenets of the multinational oil company.

Fuayefika further urged the House to repackage all the posters and send same back to SPDC with strict words of warning.

Reacting, the presiding officer of the day, Hon. Tonye Harry ruled that the attitude of SPDC was condemnable as noted by Hon. Fuayefika, stressing that before sending the posters, the company might have given the available chances for scholarship scheme to non-indigenes from non-oil producing areas of the country.

He asked the clerk of the House to gather all the posters and send same back to SPDC.
