Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, has the highest casualty figure of 893 deaths in 4,386 accidents, while neighboring Ogun state followed with 844 deaths and 3,166 reported accident, said the statistics cited by The Punch Daily on Monday.
FRSC Corps Marshal Haladu Hananiya meanwhile raised an alarm over the growing incident of accidents caused by heavy-duty vehicles, saying that 5,494 trailer and luxury bus-related accidents occurred in 2004.
A breakdown of the figures shows luxury buses and trucks caused 4,181 accidents, while tankers and trailers accounted for 1,313.
"Given the fact that they are the heaviest vehicles on the road, the impact on collision and what happens to the entire occupants of the other vehicles can only be imagined," he said.
Hananiya listed speeding, drunk driving, overloading, fatigue, poor eyesight, bad tires and poor maintenance as some of the causes of road accidents in the west African country.
