OYC president escapes assassins' bullet

PRESIDENT of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokwocha, has raised alarm over what he described as a failed plot by some unknown persons to eliminate him.

ENUGU - PRESIDENT of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokwocha, has raised alarm over what he described as a failed plot by some unknown persons to eliminate him.

He dislosed that two young men he suspected to be hired assassins stormed his residence and shot at him last Sunday morning but he luckily escaped their bullets.

Nwokwocha, who said he was yet to recover from the shock, told reporters in Enugu that he was convinced that the two armed men came to his house at Uwani, Enugu,at about 10 a.m. with the mission to kill him.

"I was sitting outside my house when these men appeared on okada, and one of them pulled his gun and fired at me. I was lucky the bullet missed me, so I quickly disappeared into the neighbourhood from where I called the police who immediately responded and visited my residence", he explained, adding that the alleged assassins had disappeared before the police got to the scene.

He said the matter had been reported to the Enugu State Police Command which has commenced investigations. The command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Shehu Adamu, confirmed Nwokwocha's report of the incident and said the police was investigating his claims.

The OYC, which Nwokwocha leads, has taken many controversial stand on major issues affecting the nation and Ndigbo in particular. Sometimes OYC had expressed views on important national issues that are opposed to that of its parent body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo,a situation which had led to friction between the two organizations.

Asked where he suspected the alleged plot came from, Nwokwocha said he had no clear idea of the source, but explained that it may not be unconnected to OYC positions on major issues.

""Perhaps, the positions we have taken on various issues, our stand on Apo six, the killing of an Igbo man in lagos by a naval officer and our reactions to the killings in Enugu may have hurt some people and prompted the plot to eliminate me and the leadership of OYC"" he said.

He said the assassination plot had forced him to seek police protection, adding that his group was still discussing with the police Command in Enugu on the issue.
