Alamieyeseigha disowns 3rd term bid

GOVERNOR Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State has dissociated himself from the clamour for third term for the president and other elected officials, saying it was unrealistic and unreasonable.

ABUJA - GOVERNOR Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State has dissociated himself from the clamour for third term for the president and other elected officials, saying it was unrealistic and unreasonable.

Speaking with journalists shortly after he paid a condolence visit to the pioneer chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Solomon Lar in Abuja over the death of his son, the governor said all elected officers into executive positions were for a period of time as stipulated by the constitution and they should abide by it.

"I don't know of any third term or extension. What I know is that we were elected based on the provisions of the constitution, which states that it is only for a two term. What I know is that by 2007, my tenure will expire and I will move on to other things" he said.

The governor who joined the former Governor of Anambra State Chief Jim Nwobodo to commiserate with Chief Lar and his family, wondered why people would want to insinuate an extension for the president when President Obasanjo had repeatedly said that he was not going to stay beyond 2007.

All attempts to make the governor comment beyond this was rebuffed as he said he was on a condolence visit and could not speak more than that.

On the death of Chief Solomon Lar's son, the governor prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant the parents and other siblings the fortitude to bear the loss. "In my place, it is an abomination for a child to die before his parents. But since God has decided to take the life of Mark, what we can do is to pray that he gives you the strength to carry on" he stated.
