BENIN CITY - Oliha Community in Benin City, the Edo State capital, was yesterday sacked by a mob and set ablaze a building in the area in protest against the killing of a youth last weekend by another youth resident in the area.

Besides, angry women and youths yesterday around the Ikpoba Hill area of the State capital yesterday attacked and inflicted serious injuries on three staff of the special committee set up by the State Government to rid the city of lunatics following an alarm raised by an unknown person that they were kidnappers.

Vanguard gathered that the mob that invaded the Oliha Community, numbering over hundred, were armed with dangerous weapons.

It was gathered that they invaded the area as early 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and held hostage residents that were unable to escape hostage for about four hours.

Trouble, Vanguard gathered, started last Sunday night when a man living adjacent to the razed building was attacked by those in the razed building and it resulted in a fight in which the deceased was reportedly attacked from behind with an iron bar.

Sympathisers, however, rushed the deceased to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where he died on Monday night causing apprehension among residents of Oliha and provoking anger among youths close to the deceased.

According to an eyewitness, the irate youths stormed the Oliha area in huge numbers shooting into the air "but no one was killed but many of our property were destroyed", said a resident.

While in another incident yesterday at the Ikpoba Hill end of the town, some angry women and youths attacked three members of the team set up by the state government to rid the state capital of lunatics, mistaking them for kidnappers involved in the alleged cases of missing persons in the area.

Vanguard gathered that the incident happened around 11:00 a.m. yesterday, and obstructing vehicular movement along the Benin-Agbor road.

It was gathered that the timely intervention of Policemen attached to the Ikpoba Hill Police station saved the officials from being set ablaze by the mob.
