AWKA - The transistion committee chairman of Awka North in Anambra State, Chief Ezekwesili Maduagwuna has been suspended from office by Chief Magistrate Court in Awka.
Delivering the ruling yesterday, the chief magistrate , Dr (Mrs) Veronica N.N. Ibeziakor, in suit number, MAW/ 213/05 , stated that the transition council boss was suspended as a result of his alleged complicity in the murder of a front line politician in the area, Chief Alex Ikeyiune.
Her ruling followed an application by the prosecuting counsel, an Assistant Suprintendent of Police (ASP) C.L. Oje, for the suspension of the chairman, and the continued detention of the few persons arrested and arraigned before the court.
He had argued that if the chairman, was not removed from office, it would jeopardise the investigation of the accused persons and stall trial in a case he described as a serious murder case, citing Section 1440 of public service rule.
In her ruling, the chief magistrate, Dr. Veronica Ibeziakor, ordered the suspension of Maduagwuna until he was proved innocent in the case, adding that he could not sit in such exalted office while he was facing a murder charge.
