OWERRI - THE newly appointed Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, has warned that it would not tolerate academic fraud or anything that will tarnish the image of the institution.
The chairman, Professor Suleiman Bogoro, read the riot act during the official inauguration of the school's governing council at the Conference Hall of the Polytechnic.
"I realise there are things that have tended to work against the achievement of the noble objectives of academic institutions in this country. These include some of the social malaise like examination malpractice, cultism, indecent dressing, rape, arson, fraud and a number of other such evils. This Governing Council has zero tolerance for anything in the negative", Bogoro warned.
He stated that any academic worth his salt will not cut corners or ask for undue favour. "I will insist that we translate that noble aspect of academic culture into the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri", he promised.
While describing the management and staff of the institution as "the instruments that have been used all along to secure the good image and name of this Polytechnic", Professor Bogoro also promised not to joke with staff welfare.
According to the rector of the school, Chief Onyekwere I. Nwankwo, there are a number of projects going on in the school, including a new academic building. "By God's grace, before the end of the year, we should have been completing one. We shall continue to strengthen all aspects. We are not just going to construct structures. We shall ensure that they are equipped with the requisite engineering equipment", he promised.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the rector enumerated the achievements of his administration and appealed for a cordial working relationship amongst members of the institution's Governing Council, staff, students and management.
