ABIA - ABIA State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has directed the immediate rehabilitation and rebuilding of the following roads in the Aba Metropolis of the following roads, Umuocham, Umule, Umuimo, Umuojima and Umuatako roads.
In a statement, the governor appealed to commuters within the Aba metropolis to brace up for a temporary inconvenience while the road construction lasts.
The roads reconstruction, when completed, will go a long way in ameliorating the movement of people within the metropolis.
'Government is well aware of the difficulties currently being faced by residents of Aba as a result of the condition of these roads and despite the difficulties associated with road repairs in the rainy season; it has commenced immediate action to ensure the rehabilitation of all state-owned alternative access roads into Aba.
While sympathizing with the residents of Aba, Government wishes to reassure them that it will continue to do all within its powers to ensure that its citizens and indeed, all those resident in the state do not go through undue hardship in the course of their daily endeavours.
The State Government also wishes to inform residents of Aba that it has expended over N280 million on the rehabilitation of the Aba-Owerri, Aba Port-Harcourt, Aba-Ikot-Ekpene and other dilapidated Federal roads in the city without receiving any refunds from the Federal Government.
That notwithstanding, Government is currently discussing with the relevant federal agencies to ensure the reconstruction of the failed portions of these roads to ease the hardships faced by commuters and affirms that these are federal roads.
'Government also wishes to reaffirm its commitment to doing everything possible to tackle the environmental situation in Aba and Umuahia. Consequently, it has ordered customized refuse disposal equipments from abroad which when deployed alongside existing ones, will bring the situation under control.
'The Environmental Sanitation Laws which Mobile Sanitation Courts have been empowered to enforce have also been mandated to go the extra mile in ensuring that while the government is doing its best to rid the state of refuse, the residents of the cities do not jeopardize government's efforts by indiscriminately dumping refuse in the cities.
'Consequently, the State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu wishes to appeal to the residents of Aba and Umuahia to cooperate with the State Government and all relevant agencies as it deplores every available energy towards the immediate tackling of the environmental and road situations in the cities.
'Government also wishes to reaffirm its desire to leave a lasting legacy of sustainable developments and selfless service delivery so that generations unborn will inherit a better society.," the statement said.
