National Universities Commission has insisted that to enforce qualitative education in the nation's tertiary institution as mandated by the Federal Government, there must be post University Matriculation Examination interview to sieve out those with high scores but do not merit placements.

Secretary of the NUC, Professor Peter Okebukola after the commission's Vice Chancellor's special lecture series on "Information and Communication Technologies in Higher Education: Prospects and Challenges for Nigeria University System," said henceforth, graduates must present their Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission letter before they would be allowed to participate in the compulsory National Youth Service Corp programme.

"For candidates before they are admitted, they must perform well in the post UME interview, this would improve standard and filter out those with high scores but do not merit a place.
'For instance if you have 50 people, they would be the best from post UME interview, so opportunity for cheats and cultists would be minimised," Okebukola said.
He said to enforce this, major stakeholders namely NUC, JAMB and NYSC have signed a memoranda of understanding with a view to presenting illegal entrants into programmes in the university as well as entrants into denied programmes.
The NUC boss said the move would prevent incident of sorting, examination malpractices, cultism among other social vices plaguing the system.
"We have method of detecting illegal entrants before they are called up for the NYSC they must attached JAMB admission letter. There is no need to worry they would be caught.
"The universities must abide by the carry capacity as stipulated by the NUC.
Carry capacity means the number of resources avialable to cater for the number of students admitted. This would eradicate examination malpractice because the number of students admitted would bee manageable for teaching, supervision and better productivity", he said.
