Biafran notes put man in trouble

POLICE in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday paraded a 30-year-old man identified as Sunday Ogbodo for allegedly being in possession of Biafran currency notes.

POLICE in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday paraded a 30-year-old man identified as Sunday Ogbodo for allegedly being in possession of Biafran currency notes.

Paraded along with him were two armed robbery suspects who said they contributed a total of N250,000 to buy one AK-47 assault rifle to aid their operations.

The alleged armed robbers, identified as Ekene Nwafor, 19, and Ifeanyi Ogunedo, 22, both hail from Onumba in Anambra State and Mbaise in Imo State, respectively.

Parading them, State Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu claimed that the duo confessed to several robbery operations, adding that while Nwafor said he was a footballer with a so-called club, Rojenny Babes, in Lagos, Ogunedo said he is based in Jos, Plateau State where he sells footwears.

According to Ogbaudu, they had confessed to communicating with their mobile phones and through it, arranged robbery operations.

Mr. Ogbaudu said the duo were arrested at the Aba park in Onitsha as they attempted to board a bus with a bag containing an AK-47 rifle, one pump action shotgun, one locally made pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, army uniforms and others, among several other weapons.

Ogbaudu said also the suspects owned up to a robbery operation at Odeakpu where a household was robbed of N15,000 and several handsets.

Also paraded was one Emeka Okafor who was found with gunshot wounds. He is said to be 26 and hails from Nkpor in Anambra State.

Meanwhile, the state police boss called on members of the public to report people of questionable means of livelihood to the police, warning that vehicles found conveying welding materials at night will be promptly arrested.

He said the step had become necessary in order to stem the tide of armed robbery operations on banks using welding materials, even as he called on medical doctors to call attention of the police to persons who come to them for treatment of bullet wounds.

Reiterating the commandís decisions to step up the fight against crime in the state, Mr. Ogbaudu urged criminals to ply their trade elsewhere, saying the police will make the state too hot for them.
