Anambra police raise alarm on spate of robbery attacks on banks


THE Anambra State Police Command has raised alarm at the spate of armed robbery attacks on banks in the State, especially, in the commercial city of Onitsha, even as it said that its men are ready to combat them.

The command noted that within a short space of time three new generation banks were attacked, all in Onitsha. The police said while the robbers were successful in one of the bank attacks, police foiled the other two attacks.

Meanwhile, the State Police Command Monday arrested two armed robbery suspects, Ifeanyi Ogunedo, 22 years, from Mbaise, Imo State and Ekene Nwafor, 19 years, from Omogho in Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State. They were arrested at Aba Park, Onitsha with a bag containing AK 47 Riffle, one Pump Action gun, one local made Revolver Pistol, ten rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, four AK 47 magazines, six rounds of 67.5mm live ammunition, five rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

The two suspects, when paraded before newsmen on Monday , confessed that they were setting out for an operation on the Onitsha-Owerri-Aba road before they were caught. One of them, Ifeanyi said he has been involved in only one robbery case at Awada,in Onitsha where he claimed he collected only N15, 000 and handset, and that he has never killed in any operation.

Also, the Police displayed an L300 bus, registration number XH 897 UWN (Enugu) abandoned by the robbers that attacked a bank last Saturday night in Onitsha, and a 230 V-Boot Mercedes Benz, number BC 276 EPE (Lagos) abandoned by the robbers that attacked another bank previously. Both vehicles were riddled with bullets holes.

Meanwhile, the State Police Command has also announced the arrest on June 26, 2005, of about 50 young boys suspected to be cultists and who were from various institutions of learning in the State. They were arrested at Ajalli in Orumba North Council. They were alleged to have gone there to initiate three of their members.
