"6yr single term should exclude present office holders"

SENATE Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Clement Awoyelu has said that the six year single term proposed by the National Political Conference should exclude all the present elected political officer holders saying, the single term tenure should commence from a future date.

ADO-EKITI - SENATE Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Clement Awoyelu has said that the six year single term proposed by the National Political Conference should exclude all the present elected political officer holders saying, the single term tenure should commence from a future date.

Awoyelu, who was speaking with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, argued that the present crop of elected politicians were voted in by a constitution which makes provision for a second term in office.

The Deputy Chief Whip noted that a situation in which some ambitious politicians are rocking boats with a sitting governor was not neat for the system.

"As for the issue of six year single term, I think it could start after the tenure of the present elected politicians.

"As a matter of fact, the six years single term would reduce tension and agitation for second term bid.

Commenting on the third term bid of Mr. President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as being canvassed in certain quarters, Awoyelu said the Senate as a body has not taken any decision on the issue, since the President has not declared his intention to go for the third term in office"

"As close as I am to Mr. President, he is yet to tell me either privately or publicly that he is interested in third term in office, I only regard all these as rumours.

On the adoption of the state governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose to run for second term in office, by the ruling party PDP, Awoyelu said there was nothing wrong to adopt a governor that is popular and hard working.

" I see myself as a leading member of PDP in the state. As for adoption of Governor Ayo Fayose to run a second term, I have been telling people that care to hear that Fayose is performing brilliantly well in the state and he is popular among his people."
