Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State yesterday commiserated with the families of victims of a recent boat mishap at Umunankwo in Ogbaru Local Government area of the state.
A boat carrying mostly traders from Akili, sank at Umunankwo, leading to the drowning of about 45 passengers.
Speaking at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ogbaru community, Igwe Gilbert Onanuju, the governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims, and observed a minute silence in their honour.
The governor said government would reconstruct the Uga junction-Atani-Osomala-Ogwu Ikpele road, a federal road, in spite of the huge cost needed for its completion.
Ngige said work on the road would start before the end of the year, saying the lowest bid for the job was N8 billion.
He said the deplorable nature of the road, compelled the traders to resort to water transportation.
The governor said, in spite of being listed in the federal budget in the past five years, nothing concrete has been done to reconstruct the road.
Earlier, Ononuju thanked the governor for his visit, and called for government's assistance on the reconstruction of the road.
