Corruption: EFCC clears Uwais


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], has given a clean bill of health to the Chief Justice of Nigeria [CJN], Justice Muhammadu Uwais over the spate of allegations of corruption levelled against him. Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu told Daily Sun at the weekend that, after a thorough investigation on the allegations, a prima facie case was not established against him.

Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu told Daily Sun at the weekend that, after a thorough investigation on the allegations, a prima facie case was not established against him.

According to him," we investigated the CJN based on the petitions we received against him. And like any public office holder, we investigated him, but at the end of our investigations, we did not find anything against him. There was no prima facie case established against him to warrant prosecution."
The CJN has on different occasions been accused of graft, the recent allegation was made right to his face in the open court where two lawyers, Messrs Emefor Etudor and Ephraim Duru, accused him of corruption. Justice Uwais was also accused of collecting N250,000, N5 billion and $3.5 million at separate times from Governor James Ibori of Delta State, for sharing among other Justices of the court to influence judgment in his favour in the case between him and two members of his party [PDP], Messrs Anthony Alabi and Goodnews Agbi. The Body of Benchers has already asked the Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Bayo Ojo [SAN], to prosecute Ephraim Duru over the allegation.
