In the early hours of Monday morning (2.00 am), some hoodlums attacked the Hallmark Bank situated in Oyigbo, killing a policeman on guard duty at the bank and removing a large sum of Monday in the process.
But the police responding to a distress call quickly moved in and blocked all the roads leading in and out of the community, a suburb in the outskirts of Port Harcourt.
In no time, they were engaged in a shootout with the criminals who did all they could to get out of the police cul-de-sac without success.
At the end of it, the robbers abandoned their two getaway cars a BMW with registration No. Lagos HG618AAA and Audi with registration No. Rivers RV 5472HE and ran into the bush. The gallant policemen continued chasing them and succeeded in arresting three of them: Chimezie, Chigozie and Edmund Okorosobo, who claimed to be a final year student of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Port Harcourt.
Looking very submissive at the Rivers State Police Command headquarters where they were presented to the press, with a large chunk of their loot and large arms cache recovered from them, the trio denied their involvement in the crime as alleged by the policemen but could not convince anyone of what they were doing inside the Oyigbo bush at the very odd hour the policemen swooped on them.
Addressing the press, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Samuel Adetuyi, said that a whopping sum of N944,495.00 was recovered from the hoodlums plus 44 empty magazines of rifles and one AK47 gun, and other implements the robbers use in their operations.
The obviously elated police boss pleaded for public support so that the police can carry out its duties more effectively and promptly.
