Workers protest alleged disappearance of Italian directors with 6-month salaries

BENIN CITY - OVER one thousand workers of an Italian firm based in Edo State, yesterday, stormed the Edo State Government House and the State House of Assembly complex, protesting the alleged disappearance of their Italian Directors with their six months salaries and allowances.

Vanguard gathered that the Italians decided to bolt away when they could not afford to pay back the money they allegdly borrowed from some banks and also off-set the bills owed to contractors who supplied materials to them.

Consequently, with the help of two Nigerian Directors who are presently on the run, they allegdly emptied the company's purse and absconded without settling six months salaries and allowances owed to the workers.

The Italian Directors are the Managing Director of the company, Alternative Managing Director, and the Director of Accounts.

Lamenting their ordeal to Vanguard at the Edo Assembly complex, leader of the group, Comrade Emmanuel Akhuetiemhen narrated that "we have been suffering for months now without being paid.

But what is bothering us now is that nothing is happening in the company again, no materials to work with, no tools to work with and our Directors are nowhere to be found. We learnt they have ran back to Italy with the remaining money which they could have used to pay us off.

"We want the government to help us track the two Nigerian Directors. We learnt that these ones are still hiding somewhere in Nigeria but the three Italians have escaped to their country.

"Government should help us get these two Nigerians so that they can come and explain what happened to the finances of the company. We are aware that this company was so buoyant even as at January this year."
