Barely two months after his brother, Sunday Thompson disappeared in Lagos in mysterious circumstances, Mr Christopher Effiong Thompson miraculously escaped another affliction from suspected ritualists who went into his bedroom and stole his six weeks old baby.
The incident, which occurred in Ijegun, in the Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos, was said to have rattled not only the parents of the stolen baby, but residents of the area and its environs.
Thompson, 40, a native of Etinan Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State, told Daily Sun that the loss of his baby would have been a bitter pill to swallow, as he had already made up his mind to commit suicide if the baby was not found.
"I would have ended my life, to bring an end to all these sufferings and temptations. Two months ago, my brother left home but could not return. Up till now I have not seen him or the corpse. His wife is pregnant and about to deliver. I just lost my father, now they stole my baby. Ending my life was the option left for me," Thompson said.
Daily Sun investigation revealed that two women from Togo are already in police net in connection with the child theft.
According to a police source, the baby was found the following day on Governor Street, Ikotun, where she was dumped by the suspected ritualists who feared that the police were closing in on them.
When the alarm was raised, detectives from Ikotun police station immediately swung into action, arresting virtually all the tenants in the house where the baby was stolen and spread their security network, making it impossible to smuggle the baby out of Alimosho local government area.
Narrating how the baby was stolen, the mother, Mrs Grace Thompson, explained that Mary was having a sound sleep in the bedroom while she went to take her bath.
When she came out of the bathroom, the girl had disappeared from the bed.
"I raised alarm and started going from one room to the other, asking co-tenants if they saw my baby," she said.
Daily Sun was told that it was the prompt intervention of the police that forced the suspected ritualists to dump the baby by the roadside.
When the reporter visited the Thompsons, little Grace was in good condition, except that the father complained that she had been having high temperature.
Investigations into the matter are still on to ascertain the role of the two suspects. Meanwhile, other people arrested in respect of the child theft, especially Thompson's co-tenants, have regained their freedom.
