PORT HARCOURT - BARELY a day after the Rivers State Police Command foiled an armed robbery attack which claimed the life of a police officer, another armed robbery attack on a bank has resulted in the death of another policeman and a security guard in Isiokpo, Rivers State.
The armed robbery in which the robbers made away with N1.4 million cash occurred when the armed robbers, numbering about 15 invaded the Isiokpo branch of a bank in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday, killing a policeman and a private security man attached to the bank.
According to Vanguard sources, the attack began around 11:00 am and the robbers were said to have arrived the bank in two 18-seater NDDC-assisted mass transit buses and commenced their operation which lasted about 25 minutes.
When the bank's security man, whose name was said to be Gabriel, saw the strange men, he grew suspicious and attempted to lock the gates of the bank, but the hoodlums pumped bullets into him, killing him instantly.
The policeman on guard was said to have reacted by firing shots at the robbers but the robbers retaliated, killing the policeman in the process.
The robbers were said to have been content with rading the banking hall and made no effort to go to the bank's vault and made away with all the money at the banking hall.
Vanguard gathered that while the robbery lasted, activities at the usually busy Port Harcourt-Owerri expressway came to a halt. Subsequently the robbers, escaped through the Isiokpo-Obelle-Ibaa route, shooting non-stop as they fled.
The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Samuel Adetuyi, who confirmed the incident said that a special sqaud of the command has been sent to the scene of the incident.
