Nigeria to train in France ahead of crucial World Cup qualifier

Nigeria will train in France from August 25 ahead of their make-or-break World Cup qualifying tie against Algeria next month, caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen announced.

Nigeria will train in France from August 25 ahead of their make-or-break World Cup qualifying tie against Algeria next month, caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen announced.

"For our match against Algeria, the team will train somewhere in the South of France beginning from August 25. We will soon get a confirmation of where exactly we will train," Eguavoen said.

The coach also said that he plans to call up a big squad for the August 17 friendly against Libya so as to have a large pool of players to pick from for the September 4 game against the Desert Warriors in Oran.

"A lot of players will be considered for the Libya game because we plan to try out as many formations as possible," he said.

Players drawn from the domestic league will tackle Benin in another international friendly fixed for August 10 in Abuja and have a chance to play themselves into the World Cup squad, the coach said.

"We hope to pick one or two players from the team that will play Benin next week," he said.

Several players from the country's Under-20 team that reached the final of the recent FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland are included in this second team.

Nigeria are presently second in Group Four behind Angola - though both have 15 points - because the latter have a better head to head record with two matches to play.
