Seven die in Lagos road crashes

SEVEN persons including a 7-year-old boy were, yesterday, confirmed dead in three different motor accidents that occurred weekend in Lagos, while several others including beggars were wounded.

LAGOS - SEVEN persons including a 7-year-old boy were, yesterday, confirmed dead in three different motor accidents that occurred weekend in Lagos, while several others including beggars were wounded.

The first incident happened along the Epe-Maroko expressway at about 7pm on Saturday after a Mercedez Benz car with registration number BD 488 ENU driven by one Mike Ofoma apparently lost control.

In the process of trying to control the vehicle, the car reportedly skidded off its lane and had a head-on collision with a Toyota Celica car in which there were four persons including the seven-year old boy. The Toyota Celica car with registration number AL 726 JBD was said to have somersaulted several times and climbed the culvert before it eventually came to a halt. The driver and the two other passengers, reports said, died on the spot.

Commuters and beggars alike who were running away from the scene, reports said, sustained varying degrees of injuries in the process.

Other motorists plying the routes stopped by to help the victims. They were said to have first rescued the 7-year-old boy who was still breathing. But the victim, however, gave up the ghost before he got to the vehicle that was to rush him to the hospital.

Driver of the Mercedez Benz was said to have escaped unhurt and reported himself at Epe police station. The incident hampered the flow of traffic on the busy highway, before the arrival of traffic policemen from Epe Police station.

Barely five hours later , a similar incident occurred along Ikorodu expressway after a bus conductor and a female passenger who fell off a commercial bus were crushed to death by a trailer truck. The commercial bus with registration number AH 990 LSD which apparently had a brake failure, reports said, ran into a culvert at Obanikoro in a bid to avoid ramming into other vehicles and, in the process, the driver and a female passenger were flung out.
